FIRE FIRE FIRE is inspired by a primal response to fire as a metaphor for the human drive to create, communicate, and develop – Callen Schaub embodies this exploration through the creation of his art. Using his signature spin machine, and the addition of new devices and techniques he has focused the application and flow of paint on canvas. Schaub produces his work by harnessing natural forces that result in paintings that reflect these natural elements. Vivid compositions, colour, and light elicit a visceral experience that registers emotionally. This specific series engages themes of contemporary communication, art interpretation, and emotion through abstract painting.

Schaub titles the works in this series with Emoji icons, their unicodes and names. He is continually inspired by the ability of abstract art to compel the viewer’s perception based on feelings, beliefs and disposition. Elevating the Emoji to an art context, he finds similarity in the open-to-interpretation nature of the language as emojis often represent multiple meanings based on other interpretations of that symbol. Interested in a universal language, Schaub offers an engaging and relatable point of access to his work by paralleling a contemporary communication phenomena with the images of his paintings alluding to the indescribable quality and multiple-meanings that can emerge from an image. Commenting on our human faculties of meaning making and perception, Schaub has created semi-representational images through abstract processes by interpreting the images he creates.
